The Countenance of a Lion

Description

Uhhhh, what am I doing here? This is the comment box, right?

*coughs* Well, this is a poster that I created for my World Literature class. We were supposed to do some sort of project for one of the first few stories in our textbook. I did mine over The Epic of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian legend.
This is Humbaba of the Cedar Forest, a demon guardian that protects the forest from harm. He can hear a footstep from miles away. His fangs are that of a dragon, his countenance is that of a lion, and his gaze is death and destruction. The great hero Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and his god-created brother Enkidu, the wild man, sought out Humbaba to challenge the demon's strength and carve their names into history. After much hesitation on Enkidu's part, Humbaba begged for mercy after the heros' first strike, and died on the second.

I honestly think of Humbaba as one of the worst mythical creatures ever (because what monster begs for mercy?), but there was nothing else bestial for me to draw except the Bull of Heaven, and I wasn't feeling that one.

This was printed and laminated, and turned in weeks ago. I figured I might as well post it, but I'm not too impressed with my work on this one. Especially that shoulder, ick.

Art (c) me.

Humbaba is actually quite OP.  He supposedly had seven auras that made him invincible. So Gilgamesh had to trick him into removing them. Even then the Sun god Shamash had to bind the beast in thirteen different types of wind so that Gilgamesh and Enkidu can do the killing blow.
